When do I need to get an electrical permit?

From time to time we get calls from clients asking us,

Hey, do we need an electrical permit for this??
— Client

The answer is always… it depends. I find it easier to start the conversation by telling them first, what does NOT need an electrical permit or inspection.

When it’s NOT needed

  • Device change outs, such as plugs or switches

  • Digital doorbells and cameras, unless they need new wiring.

  • Running wire about five feet to a new box or device.

  • Hanging or updating light fixtures.

We would encourage you to call in a permit for almost anything else, but here are some examples to help you get started.

When it is needed

  • Running a new circuit from the panel.

  • Replacing a panel or meter.

  • Wiring a home addition.

  • When any walls or ceilings get opened during a remodel or insurance claim.

For some reason calling your local inspector has gotten a bad rap over the years but let us assure you, it is absolutely in your best interest. All they are doing is checking to see if what was done is up to code, and code is the absolute bare minimum for safety!!!

We actually prefer an inspector comb over our work just in case something got missed. So next time you have to ask yourself this question, save yourself the possible regret and make the call. Most municipalities will answer your questions and even do an in home consultation for free. They want the city to be safe, which includes your house, so let’s just let them do their jobs and make sure everything is done correctly.
