Options for lighting switches

Just as we talked about in the receptacles portion, switches can be a multifaceted item these days.

Sometimes you are just changing a broken switch to get that bathroom exhaust fan working again, and sometimes you are installing a smart switch to shut off that outdoor light remotely.

Each application will have its own unique needs. So, let’s jump right in to options.

Color

As we have already gone through in the receptacle section, colors have greatly expanded when it comes to plugs and switches.

White and Ivory are no longer the only options as gray, brown, black, red and even gold have made their way into the online market.

The fact is, if you want it a certain color, you can probably find it with enough effort.

STYLE

Unlike switches close relation to receptacles, when it comes to style, that’s where things really take a jump. Instead of being stuck with the basic two (standard and decora) switches can be almost anything you need them to be.

Wireless technology mixed with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth have made huge waves in the last few years when it comes to lighting control.

Have you ever wanted a switch the tree by where you park so you can see on the way inside? Try a wireless decora switch. Want a switch with just enough light to see it glowing on the wall before the stairwell? Look for a “pilot switch.”

Of course there is the old standard dimmer switch, but even those have become much more user friendly and robust.

Let’s just jump right to smart switching. It doesn’t matter if you are utilizing Alexa, Siri, Google or other types of AI assistants, there is a switch to suite your needs.

By upgrading your main house lighting switches to match your interface, all it takes is saying something to the tune of “Alexa I’m home” and whatever preset you desire will automatically begin.

This technology is not particularly new. I remember my guitar teacher over 5 years ago would sit down before a lesson and say, “music mode.”

I would sit in wonder as all the living room lights slowly turned from yellow to reddish orange and the music faded out. Now you can imagine with how quickly things have changed, what they can do now.
